Precision is key with Seiko Astron. Every day, the watch connects with four satellites by means of GPS. The watch identifies the time zone and sets itself exactly on time with a maximum deviation of just 1 second in 100,000 years. An Astron watch is not only a powerhouse, but it is also a very beautiful watch. It is in fact finished to the highest Japanese standards. You can read more about Seiko Astron at the bottom of this page.
The name Seiko Astron has been in use since 1969 when Seiko introduced the very first quartz watch ever made. Today, the name Astron still stands for innovation. The Astron is the first GPS solar watch in the world. In addition, the watch is also very energy efficient. Normally it takes a lot of energy to connect via a GPS module to the satellites circling above earth. The GPS module developed by Seiko, however, uses extremely little energy; only 20% of the amount of energy that ordinary GPS modules need.
The design of the Astron is extremely slim despite the many functions. The case and lugs are bent just enough to be able to wear the watch comfortably on the wrist. Those who opt for a titanium version will have a lightweight watch. The GPS antenna of the Astron is also unique. It has the shape of a ring hidden under the ceramic bezel of the watch. This not only looks very nice, it also ensures optimal reception of the GPS signal. And last but not least, the sapphire crystal of the Astron is coated with a special anti-reflective layer, making the watch easy to read under every viewing angle.
The 5X watch has a diameter of 42.9 mm and a thickness of 12.2 mm; the 3X model is only 39 mm in diameter and 11.3 mm thick.
Thanks to the newly developed buckle adjustment system, the length of the strap can be gradually changed, simply by pressing a button.
Every part of the GPS module has been redesigned. Thanks to the use of three independent motors for the hour, minute and second hands, the 3X and 5X calibers, take just three seconds* to switch between time zones.
The "Time Transfer Function", available in the 5x series, allows you to easily and directly switch between the main dial and the sub-dial to display the home and destination time. By simultaneously pressing the two and four o'clock buttons, the Caliber 5X switches the display on the main dial, for example, from home time to local time. The subdial then simultaneously changes from local time to home time.
An Astron 3X/5X watch automatically sets itself to the exact time every day. When it detects sunlight, the watch connects to one or more GPS satellites to reset the time to an accuracy of one second every 100,000 years. Even if the watch fails to detect sunlight or if the first attempt fails, it remembers the time of the previous successful manual time adjustment (or time zone adjustment) and automatically attempts to receive a signal at that time.
The Astron GPS Solar watch battery never needs to be replaced. When fully charged, the watch will continue to operate for approximately six months. If it does not detect light for 72 hours, it will go into "sleep mode" but will retain all the time information for two years. To reactivate the watch, simply expose it to light for more than five seconds. A simple press of a button resets the hands to the correct time.
